Silent Auction Items Needed

Help us reach our goal of raising $500+ for NOVAA's professional development fund. Unique and exciting items are needed for the silent auction that will be held on November 4th at the Annual NOVAA Conference.

Please look through your drawers and closets at home and work. Donate those items you were keeping for re-gifting. See if your organization has any items or certificates that could be packaged with other similar items in the auction.

Examples of items that you might donate: Certificate to your organizations gift shop or admission passes, a blanket with your organizational logo, a gift pack of lavender scented bath supplies that your mother-in-law gave you for your last birthday, etc.

You will leave this seminar with enthusiasm and a sense of competence to train other in these modules.

For additional information about the Volunteer Management 101 Train the Trainer workshop with Betty Stallings and the application for attendance, visit www.oregonvolunteers.org. Member Spotlight!

The Member Spotlight is a new feature of the NOVAA E-newsletter designed to get to know one another, share best practices and discover what motivates us as Volunteer Management Professionals.

Thank you to Kathryn Siebert, Asst. Director of Volunteers at Our House, for being the first member profiled in this column.

How long have you been working with volunteers? Since 1992, when I moved from being a volunteer at Our House to taking over a little part-time gig as their kitchen manager (following my stint as an at home mom). Then Asst. Director of Volunteers, taking over as Director 12 years ago. 18 years total, all at the same place. I’d been at home with my first-born for a couple of years and heard of Our House from an article in The Oregonian. I’d lived all through the ‘80’s in the Bay Area when HIV/AIDS first hit and everyone was rapidly dying. The first hospices were established and I always meant to volunteer, but was busy with a professional, single life, and just never got around to it until this opportunity presented itself.

What is your favorite part of managing volunteers? I love the variety of people, ranging in age from 18 to 88 and from a great span of backgrounds (including educational, socio-economic, gender identification, sexual orientation, religious, ethnic).

Help NOVAA name the e-newsletter!

Help NOVAA name the e-newsletter! When the monthly newsletter went electronic, the name “NOVAA Notes” didn’t seem to fit quite right. We’re asking readers to help us come up with a new name. Use your creative juices to come up with a witty, bright, and fun title for this educational resource of all things Volunteer Management in Northwest Oregon and beyond. Please email Caryn Servis with your suggestions by September 11th (National Day of Service) and you may see your brilliant idea when you open the next NOVAA e-newsletter!
